Katharina is from Germany, where she studied biology with neuroscience as her main subject. She did her PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham (UK) as part of a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers. In 2014 she made the move from academia to industry by joining IBM UK in the Big Data Analytics division. For 18 months she worked as a technical consultant and data scientist on a variety of projects and industries, such as retail, transport, internet of things and geology, all with a strong focus on large scale data analytics. In May 2016, Katharina joined the IBM Research UK team in Daresbury, which forms part of Data Centric Cognitive Systems in Yorktown, US. Here she works with different clients from various industries by understanding, analysing and transforming data to tackle real world problems. Her main focus evolves around Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to enhance methodologies in large-scale data analytics, either in Hadoop with Spark or on HPC, to go beyond what is currently possible.
