I am responsible for setting strategy and directing IBM's worldwide research in the physical sciences. My own research interests are in the area of new materials and devices for energy efficient computing, energy conversion, and sensor based physical analytics.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1991 and a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1985. I was a post-doc at IBM Research from 1991-1992 in the Esaki-Chang group, a Senior Materials Scientist at 3M Corporate Labs between 1992-95, and then returned to IBM Research in 1995 as a Research Staff Member.

I am a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Materials Research Society. I am also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University.
