Jalal Mahmud is a Research Staff Member in the USER group at IBM Almaden Research Center since Oct, 2008. His research interests include Computational User Modeling, Intelligent User Interface, Web Analytics, Social Media Analysis, Machine Learning and Data Mining.

Dr. Mahmud earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, State University of New York at Stony Brook under supervision of Prof. I.V. Ramakrishnan in 2008. He received MS degree in Computer Science from the same department in 2006 and B.SC in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

He has published papers in top rated conferences such as WWW, IUI, SDM, CHI, MobiSys. His publications are indexed by DBLP . Dr. Mahmud received best paper nominations in WWW 2006 and WWW 2007 for his work in Web accessibility. He has also received best paper nominations in IUI 2012 for his work in automating functional manual tests. Recently he has received best paper nomination in IUI 2013 for his work in recommending targeted strangers for crowd-sourced information collection and in IUI 2014 for his work on identifying Twitter users to spread information.

Dr. Mahmud has 8 issued patents, filed 22 other patents, and received 7th Platau Invention Achievement Award.

Only 4 out of 43 accepted full papers were nominated for Best Paper Award, 198 papers submitted in total, i.e. 21% acceptance rate.

BASEX EXCELLENCE AWARD: Awarded to IBM Corporation for research contribution to reduce Information overload in Email. Mail Triage and Topika was recognized in this award. I was one of the core contributor of Topika project.

EXCELLENCE in GRADUATE RESEARCH: Department of Computer Science, Stony Brook University (Awarded in 2007) for research accomplishment (publications, awards) in the year of 2007.

BEST PAPER NOMINATION, WWW 2006: My paper "Model-directed Web Transactions under Constrained Modalities”, was nominated for Best Paper Award in WWW 2006 (http://www2006.org). Only 5 out of 75 accepted papers were nominated for Best Paper Award, 667 papers submitted in total, i.e. 11% acceptance rate.

BEST PAPER NOMINATION, WWW 2007: My paper "CSurf: A Context-Driven Non-Visual Web-Browser”, was nominated for Best Paper Award in WWW 2007 (http://www2007.org/awards.php). Only 3 out of 111 accepted papers were nominated for Best Paper Award, 667 papers submitted in total, i.e. 15% acceptance rate.
