My initial academic training was in Physics: B.S. in Physics at Carnegie Mellon U. (1997), Ph.D. in Particle Physics at U.C. Berkeley(2002), then postdocs and professorships (Tsinghua U. and Sichuan U., People's Rupublic of China), all with the goal of understanding how Nature works. As computing technology has evolved to point of simulating many aspects of consciousness, I have been zeroing in on leveraging this tool to advance science and better human quality of life.
To that end, I am intensely interested in Natural Language Processing (I have become fluent in several difficult natural languages: Russian, Mandarin Chinese, and English) and now am working on Statistical Machine Translation.
