IBM Research is a world leader in parallel optical interconnects research for servers, data centers and supercomputers. Future large scale high performance computing systems will require extensive use of optical interconnects to meet system performance goals dictated by Moore's law. On this site, you can find out more information on IBM's optical interconnects research at the TJ Watson Research Center.
The optical interconnects team is developing and demonstrating promising technologies, such as optical printed circuit boards, ultra-small CMOS optical transceivers with very low power consumption, or record-density optical coupling to silicon photonic chips. As a part of the Communication and Computation Subsystems area, the team is collaborating with many other researchers and product engineers to mature optical technologies and to demonstrate new integration schemes of optical interconnects and networks into servers, supercomputers and data centers.
