User Experience Design and Engineering - overview

We conduct research into processes, metrics and tools to enable software teams to more effectively create useful, usable and desirable products.

Current Projects

Information Foraging
Source Code Navigation
Research on models to predict code navigation by experienced programmers. Just as animal's follow the scent of prey when foraging for food, program navigation can be modeled as following the scent of words that are close semantic relations to the programmer's goal.
CogTool
Human Performance Modeling for Usability Assessment
Extending human performance models of skilled behavior to predict usability for a broader range of users using new types of devices, and new styles of interaction.
Auditory Interaction Modeling
Auditory Interaction Modeling
Exploration of cognitive models of auditory interaction, as a way for developers to gain insight into the experience of auditory access. Such models can be used to facilitate designers of low-end mobile phone applications, and users of screen readers.
CogTool
CogTool
Extending CogTool, an open source, general purpose UI prototyping tool that uses a human performance model to automatically evaluate how efficiently a skilled user can do a task on a design.
Hand-Drawn
Hand-Drawn Computing
We are exploring digital support for sketching to facilitate exploration of ideas about concrete objects and abstractions during collaborative design sessions.
Smarter Cities
Smarter Cities
The Smarter Cities project is exploring ways in which technologies may be used to make cities more effective, more sustainable, and more livable places.
External Web Presence
External Web Presence
Design and development of a high quality web presence that shows off what is available inside IBM Research and is easily navigated by people who don't know the organization.
