Prototype Design and Fabrication - overview

Designing, building and testing prototype models has always been a vital link between scientific theory and reality. The Prototype Design & Fabrication (PDF) services group in Almaden is an important partner for scientists and engineers at Almaden. PDF's professional staff of engineers, designers, model makers and technicians is available to provide mechanical and electronic design and engineering, tool and model making expertise, or even friendly expert advice for the do-it-yourself individual. The electronics and mechanical design teams engineer and build to specifications using the latest design technologies and fabrication tools. Model shop services include: 2-4 axis conventional and CNC milling and turning, jig boring, surface and tool grinding, precision slicing & dicing, wire EDM (electrical discharge machining), sinker EDM, fast hole burning EDM, fused deposition modeling (FDM) rapid prototyping, welding, soldering, brazing, and sheet metal fabrication. "Art-to Part" specialists work with scientists and engineers to reduce the time required to turn ideas into reality by eliminating the need for detailed documentation of prototype designs.
