I am a Senior Researcher at IBM Research - India (New Delhi), which I joined in February 2001. I am recognized as an IBM Master Inventor (Nov 2014 & Nov 2011, each for 3-year term) internally and as an ACM Distinguished Scientist (Dec 2014), ACM Distinguished Speaker (September 2013) and ACM Senior Member (August 2012) externally. My Google researcher profile is here and LinkedIn profile is here.
My research deals with enabling people to make rational decisions despite real world complexities of poor data, changing goals and limited resources by augmenting their cognitive limitations with technology. This has lead to expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Services and Sustainability, with proven track record of many science firsts and high-impact innovation (up to $B+) in global business environment.
My current focus is on what I call, "open innovations" - a confluence of open data (e.g., Data.gov, data.gov.in) open APIs (e.g., Open 311) and analytics made possible over the web, and their real world usage in enterprise integration. As part of this, I represented IBM at W3C's working group on Government Linked Data and am active in relevant circles worldwide. I apply these techniques in areas of social as well as commercial relevance with focus for developing countries (e.g., transportation, health and governance) and interact with customers, governments and universities around the world. I am particularly interested in building useful tools and expanding the technical community.
My research background is in:
- By technology
- By industry – Smart City (including Transportation, Governance), Airlines, Telecommunication, Health
I have nearly 20 years of experience in industrial and academic research as well as commercial, deadline-oriented, software development in both India and US. At IBM Research, I have done significant stints at T.J.Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, NY, USA; and at IBM Research - India (Bangalore). I have 100+ research papers published including all top fora in my fields, 31 US Patents issued and 40+ applications, and many recognitions for completed contributions. I actively participate in professional services globally including running the 'AI in India' virtual Google group with ~100 members since 2010, organizing conference tracks, workshops, Program Committee member for more than 50 events and serving on PhD committees.
