The information resources of many modern corporations can best be characterized as a collection of widely heterogeneous, largely distributed, and loosely coupled computing environments. And today's commercial workflow systems, although useful, do not scale well, have limited fault tolerance, and do not interoperate well with the other workflow systems. Current research directions and potential future extensions that might enable workflow services to meet the needs of mission-critical applications are discussed.
