Jitter in partial-response channels represents nonlinear non-stationary noise. When it is small, it is well approximated as linear, but its nonstationarity precludes the practicability of maximum likelihood decoding. We introduce a new decoding algorithm specifically designed for class-IV partial-response channels, which may be used complementary to least squares methods. © 1990 IEEE
