For reflective liquid crystal displays, we report a band-shifted double twist nematic (BSDTN) mode that have advantages of achromatic spectral response, wider viewing angle, and faster switching than regular uncompensated normally-black twist nematic modes. Experimental results on a band-shifted twisted-film compensated twist nematic (BSTFTN) mode whose display qualities are similar to those of BSDTN are also presented. We believe that BSTFTN can be mass-produced with high yield and low cost. Both BSDTN and BSTFTN are suitable for Si-wafer based reflective light valves for projection and virtual display applications. © 2000 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
