Doctor Olivia Smith undertook her PhD at Melbourne University, focusing on combinatorial optimisation. Her thesis, titled “Network Problems in Airline Scheduling”, extended optimisation tools for network problems which can be applied beyond the airline sector.
Before joining IBM in January 2013, Olivia worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle where she worked as a researcher into coal mining problems and as a lecturer.
She has worked in a wide range of sectors, including airlines, shipping, mining, and healthcare, using a variety of techniques to model industrial problems and to develop algorithms to solve them.
In addition to her research, Olivia enjoys teaching and works at an annual summer school for mathematically talented students.
