Dr. Rahil Garnavi is an IBM Master Inventor, Senior Technical Staff Member and manager at IBM Research Australia, and a member of IEEE. She leads research on the application of artificial intelligence to medical imaging to enable early disease detection and patient stratification. Rahil and her team have tackled challenges across domains including ophthalmology, dermatologyand neurology which has led to more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, 30 patents, and a number of recognitions including IBM’s Image and Science Accomplishment awards, as well as image analysis challenge awards of ImageCelf 2013, 2014 and 2015. Her projects have been also featured extensively in the popular media, including ABC’s LateLine, Australia Financial Review, BBC News, Tech AU. She is an honorary fellow at the University of Melbourne, supervising PhD students in the field of medical imaging and AI.
Rahil received her B.Sc. in software engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in 2003, and her M.Sc. in artificial intelligence from the University of Isfahan in 2005. She completed her Ph.D. in 2011 at the University of Melbourne, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, developing a computer-aided diagnostic system for melanoma. She joined IBM Research in 2011 and founded the Multimodal Analytics team. Her work experience in industry includes business analysis, software design and development. Her research interests involve medical image analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
