Sue Ann Chen received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Melbourne where her dissertation was on the mathematical modelling of systems in surface chemistry. Since joining IBM Research, her research interests include leveraging data science techniques to provide business intelligence insights on issues and trends in cognitive compliance, and application of deep learning methods to identify compliance risks in the financial sector. In addition, Sue Ann has had experience working on projects in renewable energy where she employed data analysis and mathematical modelling methods to improve the performance of renewable energy generation in addition to analysing the issues, limitations and requirements in the renewable energy sector. Her work in the renewable energy space has been published in top venues in engineering and data science. As well as being an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, Sue Ann is heavily engaged in the Australian mathematics community through her role as the treasurer of the Victorian branch of the Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ANZIAM) society as well as a mentor in the University of Melbourne's STEM Industry Mentorship program. She has also previously served as the Victorian Branch representative on the Executive Committee of the ANZIAM society.
