Rafael Brandão is a Research Staff Member at IBM Research Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, since 2015. Currently, he is focused on knowledge modeling and the use of technologies such as Cognitive Computing and Cloud Computing in the domain of natural resources. Holds a Ph.D. from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2010–2015) on Distributed Systems, Ubiquitous Systems along with HCI and Semiotic Engineering in collaboration with the Semiotic Engineering Research Group (SERG). Previously, worked at the Tecgraf Institute at PUC-Rio where acted as R&D leader developing an infrastructure for ubiquitous Capture & Access systems experimentation. Worked as a multimedia consultant for Quantum Brasil (2010–2011, 2013–2014) on a project for leadership development. M.S. from the Federal University of Paraíba, UFPB (2010) in DTV and Multimedia Systems. Worked as researcher at the Digital Video Applications Lab (LAViD/UFPB, 2008—2010), as software engineer at MOPA Embedded Systems (2007—2008) and Dynavideo Software Development Center (2008—2009), where developed middleware and other distributed systems. B.S. in Computer Science from Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, UFRN (2002—2006). Has experience in computer networks, embedded systems, multimedia systems, mobile devices, middleware and component modeling. Recently, stepped into the fields of Knowledge Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in general, Human-Centered Computing and Semiotic Engineering.
