Paolo Di Achille joined IBM in September 2016. His research aims at developing multiscale models of heart mechanics and electrophysiology to improve understanding and clinical management of several cardiac pathologies.
Before joining IBM, Paolo completed his PhD studies at Yale University, where he employed large scale blood flow simulations to explore the role that hemodynamics plays in thrombus formation. Specifically, Paolo investigated how the peculiar hemodynamic conditions present in pathologies such as aortic aneurysms and dissections could lead to the complex thrombus deposition patterns that can be observed in medical images. Paolo's main areas of expertise are computational approaches to study cardiovascular solid and fluid mechanics, finite element modeling, and parallel computing. He's also interested in using machine learning techniques for inverse parameter identification, and robust optimization.
