Dr. Kedar Kulkarni obtained his B.Tech / M.Tech (in 2003) from IIT-Bombay, India and Ph.D (in 2007) from the University of Illinois, USA. During his PhD, he made several algorithmic contributions to the field of mathematical optimization as applied to distributed parameter chemical and biological systems. Thereafter, he worked as a plant optimization engineer at Air Liquide in Houston, USA before joining GE global research where, among other research activities, he was instrumental in developing novel and efficient techniques to solve wind farm micro-siting optimization problems.
Following his stint at GE, he was a senior researcher in the controls / optimization group at ABB corporate research in Bangalore, India where he led a team to develop innovative math modeling and optimization strategies for efficient design and operation of different systems (specifically renewables). Thereafter, he was a data scientist at Fixstream Inc. where he developed novel machine learning / data mining algorithms to address complex operational problems in modern cloud-enabled data centers. In his free time, he also mentored budding data scientists on the e-learning portal www.springboard.com.
He is currently a senior researcher at IBM Research where he develops novel cognitive/analytics/data science/optimization/math modeling solutions for different IBM businesses. He has over 17 years of experience in mathematical modeling/simulation, optimization and machine learning. He has more than 40 international publications including 11 filed-patents (4 more rated-to-file) and 1 book to his credit. He has advised a Masters thesis student (UPES, Dehradun) and is currently co-advising 2 PhD students (IIT-Hyderabad, India). He has refereed many international journals/conferences of repute and has been invited for lectures/talks at various educational / research institutions / fora.
