I am a Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) and Master Inventor working at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center at Yorktown Heights, New York. My interests are in new research directions in deep learning, data management and its applications. In particular I am interested in scalable deep learning and database processing, data cleansing, compression, integration and exploitation of new hardware for both deep learning and database processing, clustering and indexing techniques, query processing and optimizations, access control and privacy protection.
Prior to joining IBM Research, I was associated with the Database Technology Group (DBT) at IBM Toronto Labs, Canada and the Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group (ANURAG) of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, India.
Over the last few years i have been involved in designing and building a distributed deep learning system and the tooling needed to make it user friendly. This includes tooling for cleansing and integration of data for training the models, exploitation of new types of accelerators for training, compression of models. The system has been used for training the models used in the Watson Visual Recognition service on very large amount of data. The models are also being used for several internal IBM projects.
Prior to that I have been involved with the Multi Dimensional Clustering (MDC) physical layout scheme for relational tables, Scan Sharing for relational tables, Index Compression and RDF Store for DB2 LUW projects. These have been incorporated in various DB2 Linux, Unix and Windows (LUW) releases in collaboration with IBM Toronto Labs. Before that I was involved with the DB2 Parallel Edition (DB2 PE) project and the industries first ever TPCD benchmark.
I am also involved in exploratory projects in the areas of data management on new hardware, privacy preserving data federation and its applications, database access control and schemaless relational storage schemes.
My work in the MDC project has been recognised with an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award and two Supplemental Outstanding Innovation Awards by the company. I was also nominated to the Corporate Technical Recognition Event (CTRE) 2006 for the same. My work on Scan Sharing for relational tables and Index Compression has been recognized with a Eminence and Excellence Award and also an Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. My work is also part of four Research Division Accomplishments, one Outstanding Research Division Accomplishment and one Extraordinary Research Division Accomplishment. Apart from this I have also received Patent Plateau and other lesser awards for my other contributions.
I am currently serving on the Program Committee of IEEE Big Data 2018. I also a Member of the IBM Academy of Technology and a Senior Member of IEEE
