Dr. Faisal Farooq is currently the Principal Scientist and Senior Manager in the Watson Health group of IBM Watson, where he works on next generation healthcare technology to improve patient care.  He is an expert in applying machine learning in the healthcare domain.  His general areas of interest are in machine learning and pattern recognition.  He regularly publishes in areas of healthcare informatics, machine learning, handwriting, biometrics and text analysis in multiple journals and conferences. 

Prior to joining IBM Watson, he was a Senior Key Expert (Distinguished Scientist) at Siemens Healthcare where he was responsible for development of a machine learning based system to evaluate quality of care provided during a hospital stay based on evidence based guidelines. This data analytics system is now the largest deployed ML and NLP based system in hundreds of hospitals throughout the country. 

Dr. Farooq is the General Chair of KDD 2018 and was the Associate General Chair in KDD 2017. Dr. Farooq serves on the review board of various conferences and journals like International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition, Pattern Recognition, Pattern Analysis and Applications and IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics. Faisal is a member of American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). He has chaired many machine learning in medical field based workshops at venues like ICML, NIPS, ICPR.

Dr. Farooq graduated with a PhD from State University of New York at Buffalo where he worked as a graduate research assistant in Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR) and the Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors (CUBS). Dr. Farooq was amongst the select few students supported by IBM Research with a fellowship.  He also completed multiple research internships at IBM Research.
