profile

For the past few years I have benn focused on  architectural support for computer security, blockchain, and Trusted Computing Technologies. We have are experimented with architectural changes which if properly exploited by systems can be used to increase the security of computer systems. Some of our changes are being integrated into IBM hardware architectures.  I am interested in the security of all types of distributed systems. From embedded and IoT (Internet of things) through laptops and server of all sizes and cloud computing. Security must be a first class object in the design of systems; it is extremely difficult if not impossible to add it on as an afterthought. Security and privacy are closely related.

Another area of interest is transaction processing systems that exploit cryptography, such as the block chain used by bitcoin. I am interested in the security, privacy, and scalability of such systems. I am also interested in how these systems can be used for payments, financial services,  and related areas.

I am also interested in the application of trusted computing technologies, such as the TPM and others to security for cloud, embedded, and IoT systems. As part of my work in this area I am co-chair of the TCG-TMI solutions work group and I have participated in groups associated with IoT and embedded systems. TCG-TMI has published standards on maintaining trust in a distributed system and evaluating trust in a distributed system, the Trusted Multi-Tenant Woprk Group Trust Assuarance Framework.

I remain interestdd in fault tolerant distributed computing (the area of my dissertaion) and in distributed computing in general.
