Joana Maria is a research scientist with the Data Science Group at IBM Research since July 2016. She is currently working on the Science for Social Good initiative that leverages data science and human-centered design to help solve tough humanitatian and development problems from reducing or eliminating inequalities, to improving access to health care and education, etc.
Prior Joana worked with the Micro-Systems Technology & Solutions group in the development of implantable and wearable devices that help diagnose and treat chronic diseases like diabetes and osteoporosis.
Joana received her Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008 specializing in biosensors for rapid diagnostic tests and point-of-care diagnistics. She earned a Licenciatura in Engineering Physics from New University of Lisbon. Joana is the author of over 20 publications and 8 patents.
