John Vergo is Principal Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne New York.

John currently leads an effort to develop a Cognitive M&A solution that is deployed internally in IBM. Cognitive M&A allows IBM to rapidly find acquisition targets based on complex criteria expressed in natural language, images and structured information. Key components of the work are being commercialized in Watson Group.

John is also responsibile to drive IBM Research's technical agenda to support the transformation of IBM to become a Cognitive Enterprise. The first program to spearhead the effort is Cognitive Mergers and Acquisitions. The long term research will accelerate IBM's internal transformation and spin off assets and solutions to be consumed by IBM clients.

John's past research activities include:

  • A two year rotational assigments at the IBM Research Headquaters, improving the effectiveness of Research's major programs including Research's Strategic Initiatives and Grand Challenges.

  • Adapting the Watson DeepQA system for the services industry

  • Leading an exploratory research project on business componentization and modularity, with an emphasis on supporting young companies in growth markets

John has managed the development of innovative technologies and their transition to commercial products and services. John's accomplishments include leading the software development of the first fully digital EEG machine and the development of MedSpeak/Radiology, the first commercial, real-time continuous speech recognition system, which was brought to market as IBM ViaVoice.

John has a BS in Mathematics and Psychology from the University at Albany, an MS in Computer Science from NYU/Polytechnic University and an IBM Research MBA. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, an IBM Master Inventor and led a Patent Development Team.
