Ashley is a research scientist at IBM Research in South Africa, where he works in the advanced and applied AI (AAAI) team. His current research focuses on a new deep learning architecture called "capsule networks", and initial results suggest that this architecture may outperform state-of-the-art CNNs at certain computer vision tasks.

His first project at IBM was developing an app to assist homeowners to design a their own solar PV system. The app selects components from a live catalogue, and optimises the system based on price and electrical performance. The app was launched on Earth day in South Africa, and was featured widely in local media (Mail & Guardian, The CitizenGadget Magazine).

Prior to joining IBM, Ashley founded GreenMatters Engineering, a renewable energy company focused on solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies. Ashley worked as and Analytics Consultant at Deloitte for two years, developing data-driven solutions for clients in the Banking, Healthcare and Telecoms industries.

During his academic career, Ashley obtained two undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering respectively, and received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for the top student at Wits University in 2011. He completed his PhD at Wits University in 2016, which focused on image processing algorithms for automatic lip-reading. Ashley currently holds an appointment as an honorary lecturer at Wits University in the School of Electrical & Information Engineering.
