Dr. Ivan Girardi is a member of the AIDA research team in the field of artificial intelligence in healthcare. He is currently involved in a client engagement project to develop a diagnosis support system using historical patient data. In that project, he has helped build medical dictionaries by parsing existing ontologies and developed a concept normalisation tool able to sort medical entities into clusters of concepts. He has also developed several solutions based on machine learning, knowledge graphs, and patient similarity, and has developed a question-generation system that interacts with patients by determining the most relevant additional symptoms using information theory and information retrieval techniques. He has also developed a text classification engine that detects warning symptoms based on CNN and an attention mechanism for research in machine learning and NLP. In 2018, he received an IBM Research A-Level Accomplishment Award for developing CHeDeSS (Cognitive Health Decision Support Systems).
Ivan originally joined IBM Research as a Master’s student in 2016, after which he served a post-doctoral fellowship in 2017. Since 2019, he has been a Research Staff Member of the Cognitive Computing & Industry Solutions department. He holds a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Rome, as well as a Master’s degree in High-Performance Computing and a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy.
His main research interests are in cognitive computing and industrial applications of machine learning, deep learning and knowledge-graph technologies using real-world data.
