Eleni Pratsini is Director of Cognitive IoT Solutions in IBM Research, based at the Zurich Lab. She leads the division’s activities in Internet of Things solutions leveraging cognitive computing.
Until recently, Eleni was the Director of IBM’s Research Lab in Ireland, where she oversaw the lab’s activities in Smarter Cities and Cognitive IoT, advancing science and technology for intelligent urban and environmental systems, with a focus on creating analytics and optimization solutions and systems for sustainable energy, constrained resources (e.g. urban water management), transportation, and the underlying city fabric that assimilates and shares data and models for these domains.
Prior to moving to Ireland, Eleni was Director of Optimization Research at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in New York, and Manager of Mathematical and Computational Sciences of IBM Research – Zurich.
Eleni joined IBM Research in 2003 after a successful career in academia, first in the US, where she was associate professor at Miami University, and then in Europe at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).
Eleni’s research interests lie at the intersection of data analytics and optimization, looking at industrial applications with a special focus on big data, stochastic programming and robust optimization. She has worked in risk analytics and supply chain management in a number of industries, with key projects in banking, pharma, construction, retail and travel & transport.
Eleni has a PhD in Quantitative Analysis and Industrial Engineering (U. of Cincinnati, USA), and MBA in Finance (UCLA, USA) and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (U. of Birmingham, UK).
