Interaction - overview

Interaction focuses on the way people think and feel when they are using digital technologies, centers around the emerging and future interface technologies that support human computer interaction and addresses the problem of converting data into compelling, revealing, and interactive graphics that suit users' needs. Our goal is to design systems that are easier and more delightful for people to use.  We aim to understand how to design, implement, and evaluate these interfaces.

Research Directions:

  • Cognitive & user modeling. By creating models of users’ cognitive processes, we can help detect usability problems in software systems before they lead to costly mistakes.
  • Usable mobile security.  Security often gets in the way of the task at hand. We are investigating intuitive and natural methods for creating secure mobile apps based on biometric authentication.
  • Mobile collaboration and learning. Mobile field workers often need access to information and expertise on the job site. We are creating systems that enable workers to collaborate and improve their expertise while remaining in the field.
  • Enabling technologies.  Multimodel enabling technologies help computers hear (speech recognition, speaker recognition and verification), see (face, gesture, gaze & handwriting recognition and object tracking), speak (speech synthesis, facial synthesis), and sense (affect recognition, sensor technologies).
  • Visualization.  Computer graphics has provided a powerful mechanism for creating, manipulating, and interacting with graphical data representations. It includes studying visual analytics, developing languages and models of interaction with visualizations, designing novel information visualizations for smarter visual analytics, developing new representations of 3D geometry, strategies for collaborative and social visualization, and designing software systems that support a full range of display formats ranging from smartphones to immersive multi-display visualization environments. Furthermore, from discovering successful disease treatments in health care data to uncovering anomalous behaviors in social networks, easy-to-use visualizations are critical for helping people see important patterns in big data sets.
  • Smarter cities. IBMers are helping people conserve water and electricity in their homes by tracking usage and presenting this information in clear dashboards and visualizations.
