Thin Film Heads - overview
Physics Accomplishment | 1960 - 1990
IBM researchers: Wolfgang Dietrich, Walter E. Proebster, Peter Wolf, V.S. Speriosu, Dean A. Herman, Jr., I.L. Sanders, T. Yogi
Where the work was done: IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, IBM Almaden Research Center
What we accomplished: Paraphrasing the Computer History Museum: "Thin-film processes employ photolithographic techniques, similar to those used on semiconductor devices, to fabricate disk drive heads, which read and write data from spinning magnetic disks. Thin film heads provide smaller size and greater precision than ferrite-based designs previously used for disk drive heads."
