Smart parking for improved urban mobility - overview


Abstract:

At IBM we aim to rethink urban mobility. The emerging Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms allow for new business models to organise and integrate the variety of transport services in cities. A focal point of urban mobility relates to parking, as on average 30% of the cars in congested traffic are just looking for parking spots. In fact, an increasingly accurate map of the free parking spaces is becoming available thanks to the advent of automated and connected vehicle systems.

 

At IBM Research - Ireland we are working with key players from automotive OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, telecommunication companies and academia to aim for an ICT infrastructure enabling the transition towards road transport automation. In particular, we are developing smart parking applications for connected and automated vehicles, from IoT sensor deployment, to the prediction of parking space availability and their assignment to fleet vehicles.

 

The successful applicant will develop novel analytics models pertaining to the real-time prediction and assignment of parking spaces. The project will cover IoT data exchange aspects, machine learning (prediction of parking and charging station availability), and optimisation (real-time assignment and vehicle routing).
