Physical Analytics (previous) - Solar analytics

With increased penetration level of solar energy, accurate technologies that enable solar radiation forecasting from minutes up to days ahead are playing a relevant role for solar power producers and electrical utilities. Accurate solar forecasting enables a reliable electric grid balancing taking into account supply and demand. One of the most challenging aspects of the solar forecasting is the very short term forecasting(minutes ahead) that are due to cloud movement, cloud formation and dissipation and results in rapid ramp up and ramp down rates. These cloud cover changes directly impact large scale solar power plants as well as distributed solar power generation (household rooftop installations) which effectively modifies the load profile as a function of solar irradiance. A cost effective sky camera system is developed at IBM to track cloud movements and to enable appliance control based on the short term forecasting.
