Physical Analytics (previous) - SKA

The Square Kilometer Array is an international radio telescope under development by a consortium of 10 countries with headquarters in Manchester UK and telescope sites in Western Australia and South Africa. IBM has engaged with SKA leaders for over 10 years on topics ranging from microelectronics to machine learning. Two precursor telescopes have used or are using IBM computers for major data processing: LOFAR in the Netherlands used a BlueGene/L and BlueGene/P, and the Murchison Widefield Array in Western Australia is using an iDataPlex with GPUs. A 5-year research collaboration between the IBM Zurich Research Lab and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) is investigating technologies underlying radio astronomy data processing, data transmission, and algorithms.
