Cognitive Education and Interactions - Key Focus Areas

Early Childhood Learning: For kindergarten-age children, we are experimenting with multi-modal games involving physical digital interaction experiences on tablets to make learning playful and enjoyable in the context of English language vocabulary acquisition. The experience is driven through a personalized animated character that a child can create, and who, in turn, interacts with the child and acts as a tutoring companion to learn more about him/her and design a pathway and experience tailored to the child’s needs and preferences.  In this context, we are also exploring various sensor-rich environments and interactive technologies at the intersection of Education and IoT.

Intelligent Tutoring: For older students in K-12 and Higher Education, we are developing a cognitive tutor that assists students in actively constructing knowledge by holding a conversation in natural language. The tutor can be trained to answer a student’s questions or can otherwise provide pointers to relevant parts of learning content where the answer is likely to be found. It can help students explore content visually through concept clusters and relationships. It can also assess a student’s understanding of the domain by asking questions, evaluating short responses and supporting remediation through a dialog.

Cognitive Career Counseling: We are working on a cognitive career counselor that can present personalized recommendations on industry roles, skill development needs, training programs, job opportunities and mentors, for an individual looking to enter the job market, or to re-skill for a new career. This is motivated by the massive demography-driven skill development needs in many emerging economies like India and Africa, with millions of young people expected to join the workforce in the coming decade, often with little or no formal training in vocational skills or access to quality counseling. The counselor will also provide eco-system insights that can provide the foundation for informed decision making for government agencies, training providers and other stakeholders.

In addition, we are developing techniques for transforming and modernizing legacy corporate training programs through techniques for content chunking, tagging, mapping and harvesting. This is to assist young professionals in today's knowledge-oriented enterprises, who need a highly agile and responsive training environment using modular content that is easily discoverable, engaging and aligned with their individual needs.
