Information Theory Accomplishment | 1979

IBM researchers: Jorma Rissanen, Glen Langdon

Where the work was done: Almaden Research Center

What we accomplished: Arithmetic coding is a form of entropy encoding used in lossless data compression. IBM researchers encoded an entire message using entropy encoding instead of doing it character-by-character, as with Huffman codes.
