What we accomplishedJames Cooley (pictured) co-invented with John Tukey (and possibly repeating Gauss in the 1800s) the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to convert time-domain signals to frequency domain.  Another fast alternative was invented by Shmuel Winograd.
