J2EE - Enterprise Java

Middleware and Datastores Accomplishment | 1998 - present

IBM researcher: Jerry Cuomo

Where the work was done: IBM T.J. Watson Research Center

What we accomplished: IBM has defined enterprise use of Java -- as opposed to original uses for mobile, set-top, and individual client machines. In addition to leading optimizations in IBM's J9 JVM (Java Virtual Machine), IBM defined key interfaces to connect web interfaces from commerce sites (online retailers) to backend databases, marrying the millions of users on the retail side to the much more limited number of users expected in most backend database systems. IBM also led pioneered many Java techniques in the Jikes RVM, which was also open-sourced and is widely used in the research community. Jerry Cuomo, pictured.
