SOI: Silicon on Insulator
Physics Accomplishment | 2002
IBM researcher: Bijan Davari
Where the work was done: IBM T.J. Watson Research Center
What we accomplished: SOI puts each transistor on a separate electrical "island" instead of having all transistors on a chip on the same substrate. Isolating transistors in this way allows for faster, lower-power chips. (Bijan Davari, pictured)
