Erick's research interests fall broadly in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and more specifically in the sub-disciplines of Computer Supported Cooperative Work and more specifically Information and Communication Technologies for Developing countries (ICTD). In these areas, he investigate the social practices and behaviours of individuals and groups in order to inform technology design.

At IBM Research, he has worked in Inclusive Financial Services, Agriculture, Water, Traffic and Healthcare.  Recently, his work falls within the intersection of HCI and Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly on IBM's Humans-in-the-Loop project with focuss on Auto AI and XAI

Erick holds a PhD in HCI from Simon Fraser University, Canada, under the supervision of Dr. Carman Neustaedter and a Msc in intelligent systems design from Chalmers University, Sweden.
