The experimental measurements of hard transition shift (HTS), obtained for a set of different velocities of the magnetic medium, indicate that HTS increases at higher medium velocity. The experimental data can be explained by the expansion dynamics of the writing zone. Numerical simulation of the writing zone dynamics indicates a time delay in the writing of the hard transition compared with the easy one. The dependence of HTS on medium velocity explains the degradation of overwrite at high recording data rates. © 1999, American Institute of Physics. All rights reserved.
