Ed Pednault is Senior Manager of Data Analytics in the Analytics Research Department within Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences at IBM Research. The groups in his organization bring together expertise in machine learning, statistics, and risk analytics. Their research interests span a spectrum of topics, including temporal-causal modeling, mixture modeling, reinforcement learning, spatiotemporal modeling, time-series forecasting, rare event modeling, quality control, probabilistic modeling, decision analysis, and stochastic optimization.
Ed's own research interests currently focus on parallel machine learning algorithms and frameworks for implementing massive-scale analytics on a variety of software and hardware platforms, including Hadoop, Blue Gene, and Netezza. Ed holds 10 patents and has co-authored numerous papers. He contributed the transform regression algorithm to IBM's InfoSphere Warehouse database product and subsequently led the team that developed the OLAP-style data preparation for data mining component for that product. He holds a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. In addition to machine learning, Ed also has research interests in AI planning systems, DNA structure analysis, and Kolmogorov complexity.
